Friday Update

Basketball

College basketball season starts in earnest this weekend.

NC State hosts Boston College Saturday at 2 PM.

It’s going to be a trying season for the WolfPack. We have no depth and our most experienced player is out with a long term injury. We have no depth to back up starters who, to be perfectly honest, would likely be substitutes on any other ACC team.

This was all expected. We lost some guys after Herb Sendeck left for Arizona State.

Sidney Lowe is our new head coach and you can already tell he’s getting the absolute most out of our young team. He never quits and the kids never quit.

Overall, I’m really happy we have a new head coach and I expect that we’ll be a whole lot better in the years to come.

In any event, win or lose, you know the kids will be playing with passion and they’re just so much fun to watch.

I hope the fans stick with them and keep the RBC Center filled, even through the inevitable string of losses.

Football

I’ll be pulling for Ohio State in the BCS Championship Game. Steve Spurrier lingers on. Even though it’s been years since he left Duke and Florida – he was an opposing team’s coach in the ACC, ran his mouth at Florida (but – he DID back up what he said), and now coaches at South Carolina – another hated former ACC foe – so I’m pulling for Ohio State.

I really enjoyed Wake Forest’s game against Louisville. Those kids played a great game and WF’s fans and kids are understandably proud of their school and team.

The really enjoyable game was LSU’s whupping of Notre Dame. Year in and year out ND is constantly overrated. The final score pretty much said it all.

I agree with your commment about Notre Dame's constant over-rating, but as a fan of the school, I inevitably get sucked into it every year. I always see visions of national championships, but instead see mediocre seasons followed by disappointing bowl games. Ah, the joys of fandom. 9 straight Bowl losses............when will it end???
