Classic Ride

My work involves inspections of State owned buildings. Often, I'll post photos of neat buildings or places that where I've worked.

The past few days we've been working at the various State office and laboratory buildings along Blue Ridge Road.

One of these buildings is the Motor Fleet Management garage and office. This is where maintenance and repairs are done for state owned vehicles in the greater Raleigh / Triangle area.

In the lower level of the building is a large storage / warehouse area. Mostly tires are stored there along with an area for office gatherings and such.

Along the back wall (actually the front wall of the building but it's the back wall from where you enter the area) is kept a 1977 Cadillac limousine.

It's the official governor's limo but it hasn't been really used in the past 4 or 5 years.

Most governors prefer to be driven around in standard, unmarked, Highway Patrol cars such as Ford Crown Victorias or Chevrolet Impalas. It's nice to know that our governors, like most North Carolinians, prefer not to be show offs nor care to draw a lot of attention to themselves. Just regular, down to earth, folks.

It's worth nothing that the Caddy is kept in perfect running order, and it's inspection and tags are kept up to date. You can see in the photo the license plate is 2008.

They tell me the Caddy is basically kept up in case of really special occasions. Such as the drive to the Inauguration or to use for visiting dignitaries and stuff like that.

Pretty nice 30 year old ride.

I didn't know you could still get tires with wide whitewalls.

Cruise

Photos from the cruise have been added online. See link to the right.

NC State Basketball

We won a close one on the road at Florida State Saturday.

Down by a lot we went on a 17 - 0 run right before the half and got back in the game.

With 9 seconds left, scored tied, Florida State had the ball and was going for the win. FSU misses - NCSU rebounds and is fouled. Hickson hits both free throws. FSU misses again and Gonzales rebounds - and fouled. Hits one of two free throws. With about 2 seconds left FSU inbounds and throws up a desperation 3 pointer - and misses.

State escapes with the win.

We play at Duke this week. It's gonna be a tough game.

Next home game is Saturday against Wake Forest.

Photos From Nuke

Nuke sent me some photos from where he's working in Algeria. Yep - looks like the Sahara desert.

Right Now

Right now, I've got a nice fire in the fireplace and I'm watching The Right Stuff on HDNetMovies. What a fun film.

Later tonight is the State of the Union. For the first time in many years, I think I'll skip it.

Not Much News

8 years ago today was the record snowfall in Raleigh - 20 1/2 inches. I was stuck in Raleigh for 3 days. Stayed at a friend's apartment near Cameron Village and walked to work.

When I finally got back home, Doe Run was still without power.

Raccoons

And in other Doe Run news - the raccoons showed up last night for food. It's been 13 days since they've been by. I guess they know how to survive on their own. But they sure were hungry. They kept banging on the door and I ended up feeding them 3 cup fulls of dog food. Usually they only eat 1.

Basketball

State lost a hard played game to Georgia Tech 74 to 77 Wednesday night.

We clearly have the talent but just can't seem to play together as a team. Our weakness is at point guard. We have 2 new points guards with loads of skill but who lack experience in running the floor game (Jr. guard Farnold Degand is out due to injury). It shows in close games. With our talent level, we should have only 1, 2 or maybe 3 at most, losses by now. Instead, our record is 16 - 6. Not good.

Fifth year Sr. Matt Causey for Georgia Tech shows what an awesome point guard can do for a team. His on court play and direction enables a weaker team to beat a better and deeper team.

Thanks to Chip for going to the game with me.

Back Home

A lot of other stuff has been going on besides the cruise last week.

My roommate, Nuke’em, was supposed to go on the family cruise.

He had accepted a job with a geophysical subsurface mapping company in the past month and his initial posting was (is) Algeria.

He applied for his Algerian work visa and we figured it would arrive after the cruise. Turns out, it arrived the Tuesday before the cruise. And the company needed him right away.

So, at the last minute, SL was substituted for Nuke’s spot on the cruise.

Nuke received his electronic airline tickets on the Friday before the cruise. SL and I flew out of RDU for the Cruise on Saturday afternoon; Nuke flew out of RDU for London / Algeria Saturday evening.

I received a couple of emails during the cruise - Nuke arrived safe and sound in the Sahara desert. Well, safe anyway. ;-)

Yesterday and today, I’ve been able to chat with him via Google Chat and Yahoo IM.

Seems Nuke’s job is going pretty good. He likes the work, his co-workers and the locals. His workday hours are from 7 AM to 7 PM, 7 days a week. So I get to catch up with him typically in the morning here which is early afternoon there.

He’ll be in the field until the end of February; at which time he’ll have 3 weeks off. I pick him up at RDU on February 28th.

Nephew

Also spoke, via IM, to my nephew today. He’s left Red Hat Japan and now works for Google Japan / Asia. I think he’s in charge of 4C in Tokyo. That’s Commie China Content Control.

Joking.

He does something he refers to as user interface environment experience or something like that. Hmmmm . . . I go to the office to work. I guess they go to the office to have experiences. Yaaay for the environment!

Home

It’s nice a quiet around the house.

I’ve already been able to get some serious cleaning done in Nuke’s absence. For example, I cleaned the stove and oven on Sunday. It hasn’t been done in quite a while and had gotten kind of gnarly.

Over the next week I plan to go through the house doing a real good cleaning – one room per night. I should have this house in pretty good shape by next weekend (damn – I don’t think Nuke’s ever cleaned the bathtub in his bathroom – ick).

Critters

I haven’t seen the raccoons since I’ve been back. The temperatures have been dropping into the teens and twenties so maybe they’re in semi-hibernation. Raccoons do that during the coldest weather.

NC State Basketball

NC State dropped their first 2 ACC games against UNC (boooo hissss) and Clemson. But they came back and won in overtime against ranked Miami Saturday night (I gave my tickets away since I was flying back late Saturday).

Tomorrow night (Wednesday) we play Georgia Tech at the RBC. I’ll be there.

Work

Work is just like I left it – darn good. I have a job I really enjoy and I work with a great bunch of people. It feels good to be back in the routine.

2008 Family Cruise

Went on a family cruise last week. We’ve been doing this for quite a few years now. Unfortunately, we’ve done this so much, we’ve kind of worn out all the ports we visited.

For example, this year we stopped at Belize (4th visit for me), Roatan Island (3rd visit for me), Cozumel (geez, half dozen or more visits for me?), and the cruise line’s private island (I think I’ve been there before, but I’ve been to so many – they start to run together).

But – any cruise trip is a great vacation – and there’s always something new to see in the ports if you want to get beyond the usual tourist stuff.

This trip there were my sister (GH), brother-in-law (CH), brother (CA), sister-in-law (BA), aunt (SG), a friend of GH and CH (CF), two friends of mine (SL and DB) and a friend of DB’s (NH).

Saturday

SL and I flew down late in the afternoon. I really didn’t think it through and should have booked an earlier flight. No problems, arrived on time, easy cab ride from the airport to the ship – but I misread the departure time – we made the ship with less than 30 minutes to spare. Any airline delays and we’d have missed the boat. Note to self – next time – pay attention!

Sunday

Sunday was a day at sea. I went to the ship’s library and checked out 3 books. Did nothing but lay around and read.

And eat of course.

Monday

Roatan Island, Honduras.

DB, NH, SL and I went to a ship’s beach excursion at West End. DB and NH also went to a Dolphin swim as well. Typical rustic style resort but a new modern condo building is under construction next door. GH, CH, CF and SG ended up at the same place via taxi.

CH announced authoritatively that the condo’s were for sale – cheap - $29,000. Bullshit. The kitchens alone (cabinetry, sub zero appliances, granite counter tops, etc.) probably cost $29,000 to build / up fit. My guess is about $200,000 for a small unit.

Late day and early evenings are spent on DB's deck. He always gets a nice room on these trips and it's a great place to relax and unwind.

Working on 2 very silly light weight novels by Christopher Moore. Sort of a juvenile sophmoric gonzo prose. Now that’s a combination - juvenile, sophmoric and prose in the same sentence.

Tuesday

Belize City, Belize.

I walked around the city by myself. Went to the National Museum to see the worlds largest carved Jade Head – discovered in the Altun Ha ruins not too long ago.

Turns out – the actual jade head is kept in a vault in the central bank and is only brought out a couple times a year for viewing and ritual Mayan sacrificing and such.

But – the bones and other artifacts that the head was found with are on display along with a replica of the jade carving.

The National Museum was an operating prison till about 1998 when a new prison was built and the old one converted to a museum.

Also went to the National Handicraft Center which was OK. Walked around and just looked at the local architecture and kept getting pestered by the local street people. Note to self – next time – don’t walk alone.

SL, DB and NH went zip lining and cave tubing.

Everybody else hired a cab and went to the Altun Ha ruins and the Belkan Beer plant.

Wednesday

Cozumel Island, Mexico.

SL, CA, BA and I went on a jungle ATV tour. Man – that was fun. Mudding through the jungle and stopped at a small Mayan temple / observatory and the tomb of what is thought to be the last Mayan King of the Island. That was a blast – now I know why all the kids in my neighborhood have ATVs.

DB, NH, and CF went to Tulum.

GH, SG and CH walked around town and shopped.

Thursday

Another day at sea. I really like the way the sea days are interspersed during the trip. It’s nice to just hang around without having to do anything.

Got both Christopher Moore books finished. While his stuff won’t exercise your mind, they were humorous light weight books – perfect for cruise reading.

I also finished an Atlantic Monthly and passed it on to DB. I wonder if he’s got to the Middle East political article and found the small box item about how engineers seem to be drawn to terrorism?

I checked the internetubesweb for email. Also looked at a Raleigh TV station site. Uh oh. The weatherman is saying there’s a possibility of serious snow in Raleigh when I’m supposed to fly back Saturday. As in 6 to 12 inches.

Friday

Stirrup Cay, Bahamas.

This is a private island beach owned by the cruise line. Next door is another private beach island that had a Celebrity ship anchored.

Nice day to just laze around on the beach – snorkel – wade – swim – sleep – read – eat – and basically do nothing productive.

That evening we had a small birthday celebration for Aunt S (SG). I got her a Bob Marley tee shirt. I hope she wears it around her retirement community.

Saturday

Back in Miami.

Checked the airlines – the snow event isn’t that big of a deal in Raleigh but Atlanta has serious delays due to icing and such. BA and CA can’t get out of Miami till Monday. My and SL’s flight is direct to Raleigh so we’ll be OK. The only downer is that our flight didn’t leave till 8 PM. Tried to get standby for an earlier flight but it was over booked already.

SL, GH, CH, CF, SG and I went to the condo GH and CH were using (a friend of theirs own it - Blue Condominium for what its worth).

Later, SL and I went to Bayside Park and Market and did some sight seeing and basically just hung out. Being in Miami, we had Cuban Sandwiches for lunch - at a restaurant named Latin America - flattened of course.

Finally, we took a cab back to the condo and picked up our luggage that the front desk was holding for us as everybody else had gone to the airport or were on the road back to their respective homes.

Snowing some and darn cold when we got back to Raleigh but no big deal – maybe an inch or so of snow.

So that’s about it – great trip – had a good time with everybody – and nice to be home.

Movie

Watched Memoirs Of A Geisha this weekend.

I had not seen it earlier since my nephew (who lives in Japan) was so critical of it. It’s a movie – not a documentary. I enjoyed it – the cinematography and music especially. Even though it had a happy ending, a sad story, nonetheless.

Went into the office for a little bit Sunday, and I brought a lot work home with me to work on the next couple of evenings.

I’ll be working at Ft. Bragg Monday and Tuesday.
