October 12, 2014

At yesterday's game, the weather started out sunny and hot. By halftime - heavy clouds had rolled in and it started raining and lightening.

Right before halftime - when you could see lightening in the distance - it was announced that spectators were encouraged to go to their cars in anticipation of a lightening delay.

During halftime - I was going to wait out the rain on the concourse under the upper deck - but announcement was made that all spectators were to evacuate the stadium.

So, I went to the truck and decided to head on home and watch the second half on TV. Partly because I did not know how long the weather delay would be - and mostly because of the disappointment in the very poor play by NC State.

Brett Friedlander of the Wilmington Star is a really good sports columnist. He sums it up perfectly -

Breakfast

Drove down to Fayetteville to have breakfast with my brother and sister-in-law. They were visiting from Georgia for Chuck's High School Reunion.

Fortunately Chuck called me this morning around 7:00.

I had set the alarm on the clock radio - but I think there must be an additional step to turn the alarm on. It's a Sony Blue Machine and the operation and controls, to be honest, kind of suck. It's hard to tune radio stations, it is overly complex to set the two alarms and also the blue on blue display is hard to see.

This Sony Blue Machine is a replacement for my previous Sony clock / radio that died a couple months ago. It's operation was also cumbersome and could have had a much better design.

Come to think of it - my Sony Stereo Receiver is also difficult to operate.

Sony makes great electronics. But their user-interface usually leaves a lot to be desired. Intuitive design is NOT Sony's forte.

I will make my standard observation about college football: You have to stick with a coach for 5-10 years if you want success.

If a program keeps swapping coaches every 4 years, the new coach will come in with a lot of hype, will talk about his system, declare the recruits and players from the former coach don't fit his system, will recruit great players for his system, talk about patience and waiting for his system to take hold, after 3 or 4 years, the fans will get tired of his system and will demand a new coach.

Repeat.

Dick Sheridan (a great coach in the making), left after 6 years.

Chuck Amato left after 6 years.

Tom O'Brien left after 5 years.

Dave Doeren (" . . . patience is wearing thin . . . ")

Strong programs have a foundation of strong coaches that stay there and win.

As a Husker Fan, I am willing to wait for Bo Pelini's system to take hold, not sure if the rest of Husker Nation has that patience.
